A thirty minute play, performed in Wolverhampton Art Gallery as part of the 2021 Wolverhampton Literature Festival. Inspired by a 1956 painting of a Windrush-era nurse in the health service by Birmingham-based artist, Irene Welburn.
The play draws on archive research trying to gather information on nurse Brown and the artist. It also draws on discussions in presentations by jefny Ashcroft and Joy Baines about the painting in the previous year’s Literature Festival, especially on the experiences of other black women working in the NHS.
